Brix: A measure of sugar in grapes: one degree Brix equals 10 grams of sugar per litre. Mature grapes are typically 21 to 25 Brix, equating to 11 to 13 percent alchohol after fermentation.*

Geology: Mt. Boucherie (near Kelowna), home to a number of wineries, is an extinct volcano.

Fermentation: The natural process in which yeast converts sugar to alcohol.*

Quality: The VQA designation (Vintners Quality Alliance) requires a professional tasting panel to approve each wine.

Varietals: 49% of British Columbia’s wines are white. 51% are red. In the last acreage survey conducted, 97.1% of the yield was from vinifera grapes and 2.9% from hybrids.

GULF ISLANDS - SATURNA ISLAND

WINERIES VISITED

1. Saturna Island Family Estate Winery

A part of a group of over a dozen large islands and hundreds of tiny islets, Saturna is one of the larger Gulf Islands, although its population is only 315.
Hot and dry in the summer, Saturna got its name from a Spanish sailing ship Saturnina that explored the Pacific Northwest coastline in 1791.

Interesting to note: Saturna has a ragged resident colony of goats, descended from those of its original settlers.

THE TOUR

NOTE: May to October only. Please check with the winery to guarantee their hours of operation.

Visiting any Gulf Island is a day trip all by itself. In addition to the wineries mentioned, there are often beaches, picnic spots and quaint towns with shops and cafes to enjoy. There are cottages, campsites and B&B’s available for accommodation, but it’s best to book ahead, especially in the summer.

You’ll arrive at Lyall Harbour on Saturna Island from either Swartz Bay or Tsawwassen BC ferry terminals. The sailing times from Swartz Bay range from 1-2hrs and over 2 - 3hrs from Tsawwassen. You can also reach Saturna Island by floatplane. The flight time is less than 20 minutes from Vancouver International Airport.

Saturna Island Family Estate Winery is located oceanside below the towering face of Mount Warburton Pike. It’s just a short drive or, if you prefer, cycle from the harbour. The winery has an excellent bistro for lunch and is home to a longtime colony of peregrine falcons. They make their home in a small cave high on the cliff overlooking the vineyard.

Make your way back to your return ferry at your leisure, but don’t dawdle. If you miss it, it could be the last one for the day – and then you will need a place to stay for the night!

TOTAL FERRY TIME (TSAWWASSEN): 2-3 HOURS
TOTAL FERRY TIME (SWARTZ BAY): 1-2 HOURS
TOTAL DRIVING TIME (ONE WAY): 10 MINUTES
RECOMMENDED TOUR TIME: FULL DAY

DESIGNATED DRIVER
Wines should be consumed responsibly. DO NOT taste and drive. Each winery will offer you several samples and over the course of a tour, and it is easy to consume far too much wine to be able to drive. Plan ahead and choose a designated driver before you begin your tour.
