Varietals: 49% of British Columbia’s wines are white. 51% are red. In the last acreage survey conducted, 97.1% of the yield was from vinifera grapes and 2.9% from hybrids.

VQA: VQA=100% BC - All British Columbia wines bearing the VQA symbol must be made from 100% BC grown grapes. The wines are screened by a professional tasting panel and wines found faulty cannot be sold as VQA wines.

Clone: The mutation of a species. Growers select and propagate clones selected for such desirable qualities as early ripening, vivid flavour and deep colour.*

Hybrid: Grape varieties developed, typically by crossing European varieties with native North American varieties. The plant breeder’s objectives include developing varieties that ripen early, resist disease or are winter-hardy.*

Organic: A technique for growing grapes without using chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides or commercial fertilizers.*

BC Wine Institute Welcomes New Communications Manager

Kelowna, BC (September 28, 2009) - The British Columbia Wine Institute (BCWI) is pleased to welcome Lindsay Anders to their team as Communications Manager. In this role, Lindsay will be responsible for media and public relations, as well as BCWI member and stakeholder communications amongst other areas of responsibility.

Lindsay has been in the BC wine industry for five years, most recently as Marketing Coordinator for Quails’ Gate Estate Winery.She graduated on the Dean’s List from Thompson Rivers University and completed her WSET Advanced Certificate and brings a great passion for the industry.She is excited to bring her experience and insight to the BCWI and the membership.
