Varietals: 49% of British Columbia’s wines are white. 51% are red. In the last acreage survey conducted, 97.1% of the yield was from vinifera grapes and 2.9% from hybrids.

History: In 1931, Calona Vineyards opened as the first commercial winery in the Okanagan.

Organic: A technique for growing grapes without using chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides or commercial fertilizers.*

Vinifera: A species of grape–Vitis Vinifera–that produces the classic wine grapes that have spread from the vineyards of Europe.*

Varietal: When the grape variety in the wine is named on the label (Chardonnay, Merlot), the wine is a varietal.*

This year's competition received 3,383 wines from 931 wineries. There were a total of 116 Best of Class Awards, 404 Gold Medal Awards, 943 Silver Medal Awards and 1,030 Bronze Medal Awards. The competition received wines from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, Italy, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Portugal, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Turkey and the United States.
